Low Cost Method to Reduce Slagging, SOx, NOx (GET PDF) Technology to prevent slagging and fouling for coal fired boilers, allow increased use of low sulfur coals, reduce SO2, NOX, and eleminate SO3 emmissions. This technology may apply to fireboxes in many other units that were sized too small to even consider the use of low Sulfur coals. |

Asset Valuation and Optimization (AES154)Describes APTECH’s service for companies planning to buy or sell generating plants, or negotiating long-term electricity service contracts. Minimize the financial risk by hiring APTECH to inspect and evaluate the plant’s equipment and records. We report back to you on the unit’s needs for future capital & maintenance spending. |
Due Diligence Review (AES089)Describes APTECH’s experience in assisting fossil generating companies buy, plan and optimize generation assets. Twenty-two case studies involving asset evaluation, cost of cycling analysis, power purchase agreements, boiler tube failure reduction, avoided reheater replacement, fuel switching, in-service inspection, life management, life extension and piping condition assessment. |

Partial List of Cycling Projects (AES044)A list of cycling and cycling-related projects completed by APTECH for electric utility companies in North America and Europe. |
Power Plant Cost Analysis (AES076)Lists APTECH’s methods of analyzing power plant costs. Cycling cost analysis, budget projections, asset evaluation, real time cost analysis, cost of ancillary services, future capital and maintenance costs, stranded costs, dispatch for true low cost. |
COSTCOM TM (AES034)COSTCOM is Windows TM based engineering software that computes damage accumulation rates and costs for specific types of cycling operations. This is done by using real-time data from the plant’s data acquisition and control system and computing actual stresses and damage accumulation. COSTCOM draws on APTECH’s cost of cycling analysis that derives dollar costs for defined load transients.
Cycling Advisor TM (AES127)Cycling Advisor is engineering software that provides guidance on cycling strategies as input to real-time dispatch programs for fossil utilities. Cycling Advisor seeks the lowest system cost hourly dispatch schedule taking into account all major cost factors, including generation equipment wear-and-tear. Including the rates of equipment damage will reduce the unit’s total combined fuel and damage costs while meeting system loads.

Detection of Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (AES049)Describes APTECH’s service for detecting flow-accelerated corrosion in piping without removing insulation. Our nondestructive test method, called RTD-INCOTEST, uses patented pulsed eddy current technology. We have used RTD-INCOTEST to successfully examine hundreds of piping systems in both fossil and nuclear power plants. |

Corrosion Fatigue Testing for Boiler Waterwall Tubing (AES131)Corrosion fatigue in boiler waterwall tubes is one of the largest contributors to fossil power plant forced outages. This brochure describes APTECH’s improved ultrasonic inspection technique for finding damaged tubes. This technique can scan, relatively quickly, the entire tube surface facing the furnace. We then evaluate the boiler design in the damaged areas, and recommend modifications to reduce loads that contribute to corrosion fatigue.

For Sale : A System for Boiler Tubing Life Prediction (AES006) APTECH’s system for determining the remaining useful life of boiler steam tubing, called TubeAlert SM, is available for purchase. The system includes the ultrasonic instrumentation need to measure the tubing’s internal oxide thickness, and the software that predicts the remaining life. The user, without expensive consultants, will be able to determine when and where future tube failures will occur.

Summary of Tubing Remaining Useful Life Service (AES020)Lists the key attributes of APTECH’s TubeAlert SM service for predicting the remaining useful life of steam-cooled boiler tubing. |
On-Site Remaining Useful Life for Steam-Cooled Tubing (AES081)Describes APTECH’s TubeAlert SM service for predicting the remaining useful life of superheaters and reheaters. APTECH developed TubeAlert in 1989. We ultrasonically measure the tube’s internal oxide thickness, crunch the data, and then provide the remaining useful life prediction to you on-site. Over the years have used it to evaluate hundreds of superheaters and reheaters. It is the industry’s original tube life prediction method, and has been much imitated. Accept no substitutes.

High Energy Piping Examination Projects (AES073)APTECH’s provides unique service for determining the health of aging high energy piping in power plants. Our piping guru, Marvin Cohn, P.E., pioneered a systematic method that includes hanger walkdowns, photo documentation, and as-found stress analyses to identify the at-risk locations. This brochure lists over 100 such projects by utility name, unit name and type of piping system.

APTECH’s Boiler Modeling Capabilities (AES145)APTECH has a mathematical boiler model that is used to predict the effects of operational and design changes on the boiler’s heat flow patterns. It has been validated by experience. It is customized to study your specific areas of concern, such as temperature imbalance, tubing modification, slagging and fouling, fuel switching, tube life, and burner optimization. |

Eliminate Forced Outages with TubeMod ® (AES041)This hard-hitting brochure outlines the benefits of TubeMod, a proactive way to eliminate forced outages caused by failures in superheaters and reheaters. TubeMod also extends remaining useful life, thus postponing or avoiding altogether the need for replacement. Talk about capital cost reduction! Call APTECH and talk directly to our TubeMod guru, Terry Rettig , V.P. He’s a real nice guy and has lots of TubeMod war stories to tell you.

Optimized Life for Reheaters and Superheaters – TubeMod ® (AES144)This brochure was our first attempt to put down on paper the outstanding benefits of TubeMod. Focused on superheaters and reheaters, the TubeMod process starts with a remaining life analysis using our TubeAlert system. We design and then install steam flow controllers to optimize the tubing’s temperature distribution. This ends up increasing the life of the entire heat exchanger. TubeMod is a patented process, so you can’t go anywhere else for it. Why would you? It’s the best! No unexpected failures have been reported at any of the modified units since the first TubeMod installation in 1990!

Generation Reliability Improvement Programs (GRIP Paper)This is a technical paper that describes APTECH’s program for the power plants owned by the City of Austin, Texas back in the early 1990’s. Known as the Generation Reliability Improvement Program (GRIP), its goal was to extend the life and improve the reliability of six fossil units. The program also considered the impact of cyclic operation, capacity limitations and enhancements, maintenance and operation analysis.

UNIRAM Unit Reliability Model (UniRam Brochure) UNIRAM stands for Unit Reliability, Availability and Maintainability. It is software that determines the effect that the operation of individual pieces of equipment in a power plant has on the unit’s performance. Among other performance indices, UNIRAM calculates the Equivalent Forced Outage Rate (EFOR). This brochure briefly describes how it works and its applications.
